Mount Borah Attempt (2017)

Mount Borah attempt number 1.  I tried this thing at the end of July and actually made it about 2/3rds of the way up.  I stopped at the beginning of chicken out ridge since I didn't actually realize I had gone that far and thought I had gone off trail somewhere and was somewhere I should not be. I waited around a while but nobody came up or down so I figured better safe than sorry and went back down instead of possibly getting stuck or falling off the mountain.  I will be trying this again after seeing some decent videos.  Was still a fun trip and worth the time driving up there even if I didn't make it all the way up.

A few words of advice for anybody who wants to do it but has not yet:

1) Go on a weekend.  This time I went on a Monday and I passed 3 people the entire day, unfortunately nowhere near chicken out ridge.  The second time on a Saturday there were probably between 50 and 100 people on the trail, so even if you aren't totally sure where to go at any point, somebody is either close by or will come along who can probably help.

2) Do a little bit of research before you go.  YouTube has some good videos of people going across chicken out ridge along with a few other sections along the way.  Getting at least a general idea of some of the sections of the way are handy to know.

P.S. I'm also dumb and never really got a picture of the actual summit of Borah, as anybody that has been up it or actually knows what it looks like can attest to (I got a lot from the second trip).  For some reason I think I thought the small rise just to the left of the ice bridge was  the top, even though you can pretty clearly see the peaks and ridges to the left are much higher.  The second time I was much more prepared for CoR and the rest of the way up. Mount Borah is the tallest peak in Idaho at 12,662 feet and of course #1 on the list of 9 12,000 foot peaks in Idaho.
